Consumer Reports warns of pork problems

By Bob Coxe

Washington, DC —

How do you know that pound of bacon or that pack of pork chops you just bought at the grocery store is fit to eat?

Consumer Reports tested  200 samples of pork products, and found most were contaminated with potentially harmful bacteria, including Listeria, Salmonella and Enterococcus, an indication of filth.

Consumer Reports also notes that 90 percent of the bacteria they found were resistant to antibiotics, because of the drugs used in meat production.  About 20 percent of the samples contained traces of a drug used to produce leaner cuts of meat.

A food safety expert with the U.S. Agriculture Department calls the report inflammatory, and insists our meat supply is safe.
