WSB meteorologist Kirk Mellish says we should finally get back above freezing today. Most places haven’t broken 32 since Wednesday afternoon.

There are no advisories posted from the National Weather Service and the warmer temperatures mean school kids return to normal schedules today. No school districts announced plans to delay opening or amend procedures a day after a handful of districts in the mountain counties delayed opening for two hours.

It was two degrees yesterday morning in Blairsville and four degrees in Blue Ridge. Wind chills hit minus-7.

The low in Atlanta yesterday was 11 with a wind chill of zero to 3 below before daybreak. It was 7 degrees in Dallas, Kennesaw and Dunwoody, 8 in Cartersville, and 9 in Marietta, Chamblee and Alpharetta.

Thursday marked the coldest day since Jan. 24th 2014.

While it will be a little warmer today, it’s still going to be a few days before we see 50 degrees again.

Even with the sunshine, high temperatures today will still be about 10-15 degrees below normal. But Mellish says we could reach 40 today. But it’s still going to be very cold tonight, with overnight lows between 16-and-20 degrees.

The cold temperatures will hang around for the weekend. Mellish says we should hit near 42 degrees on Saturday under mostly to partly sunny skies with lows staying in the mid-20s.

The clouds move in for Sunday with a 60 percent chance of light rain by the evening. But we should stay above freezing all day. Highs will be around 42, with lows only hitting 35.

There is a 60 percent chance of showers on Monday and 40 percent Tuesday. Mellish says high temperatures will be between 48-and-51 degrees. Overnight lows will range from 35-to-42 degrees.

Overall, next week looks damp, murky, chilly and unsettled. "Chances for any freezing rain are too low right now to worry about Sunday, Tuesday night, and Thursday but it bears watching" Mellish said. For now only cold rain is expected.
