Georgia Tech grad student, parents die in crash

By Judd Hickinbotham

ATLANTA —

A Georgia Tech grad student and his parents are dead after a wrong-way crash in the Smoky Mountains over the weekend.

Police say another driver swerved into the lane of Ashish Dembla, 26, hitting the car head-on.

A witness says the crash site, near Knoxville, Tenn., was a bad one.

"It was just so severe," she said. "I've never, ever, ever seen anything like it in my life."

Meanwhile, one of Dembla's friends from Georgia Tech says she, along with plenty of others, still can't believe what happened Saturday.

"It was really shocking for me because two days back, his parents were visiting from India," Sonal Sukheeja tells Channel 2 Action News. "So they were here on vacation."

Dembla's sister was also in the car, and remains in critical condition.

Dembla graduated from Georgia Tech in 2009.

"He wanted to live his life very passionately," says Sukheeja.
