By Condace Pressley

A first-term Georgia Senator thinks gifts to lawmakers should be limited to $100 per meeting, and says he has ten fellow Republicans willing to support his bill.

Senator Josh McKoon R-Columbus concedes other legislators have advised him to leave this issue alone, but he's refused.

"Last year, it was almost $1.8 million dollars given to the 236 members of the General Assembly," he said.  "I believe and quite a few members believe it's time for that to change."

McKoon says supporters of the bill - which includes some Democrats who have agreed to co-sign the measure in the Senate Thursday.

"There's no question that there are folks that don't want to see this move forward," said McKoon, "that's been communicated to me quite clearly."

The Tea Party, conservative groups and other ethics watchdogs have mounted phone and email campaigns to urge passage of the measure.

"I know that there's a lot of pressure put on people not to sign the bill, not to support the bill, not to talk about the bill," said William Perry of Common Cause who argues legislators need to start living like the people who vote for them as opposed to an "elite class."

"At the end of the day you have to decide if it means anything to be here," said McKoon.
