Thousands paid their respects as Atlanta police officer Gail Thomas was laid to rest Monday.

The funeral was held at Elizabeth Baptist Church and Thomas was buried at the Mount Harmony Cemetary in Mableton.  Her body was draped in a U.S. Honor Flag.

Atlanta police officers waited at Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport Sunday to receive the flag for her. The police department’s honor guard presented Thomas’ family with the flag Sunday.

"She deserves it,” said Jasmine Sherman, Thomas' daughter, told Channel 2 Action News. “She deserves everything she's been given. She died a hero."

Jasmine’s mother served on the police department’s honor guard.

Thomas, a 15-year veteran of the police department, was killed in the line of duty Tuesday. An accused drunk driver ran over Thomas while she was helping a motorist on Interstate 75 in Atlanta.
