LITHONIA —
The father accused in a DUI crash that killed one of his daughters and left a second one in critical condition has been cited for drunk driving before.
WSB's Richard Sangster reports that Anthony Johnson, 35, was arrested for driving under the influence in 2002 and again in 2004.
Johnson appeared stoic as he walked into the DeKalb County Magistrate Court on Tuesday morning, but during the hearing, he broke down and cried. A judge set bond at $12,500 on charges of first-degree vehicular homicide, DUI, and endangering the life of a child while DUI.
He was emotional at the end of the hearing, too, telling reporters, “I love my wife and kids. Pray for my child in the hospital."
Fifteen-year-old Corliss Johnson was killed Sunday night on Highway 78 after police say Johnson wrecked his car near Stone Mountain Park. His 11-year-old daughter, Joy, is at Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta at Egleston with a skull fracture and possible brain injury.
Remembering Corliss
The night before the father of a girl killed in a wreck goes to court, more than 100 people turned out for a candlelight vigil in the teenager’s honor.
Corliss Johnson, 15, was killed in a wreck in DeKalb County Sunday night. Police say her father Anthony is responsible because he was drunk. Johnson’s sister was critically injured in the wreck, while her two younger brothers had minor injuries.
"This is such a tragedy for all of us," one of Coliss’ friends told Channel 2 Action News.
Corliss was a freshman at Stephenson High School in DeKalb County. The crowd gathered Monday night outside the apartment she shared with her family.
"We laughed and shared a lot of good moments together," said friend Shatara Grimes..
Her father Anthony Johnson is expected to be in court Tuesday to answer to charges of DUI, vehicular homicide and failure to maintain a lane.
DeKalb County police spokeswoman Mekka Parish told News/Talk WSB Johnson was driving with his four kids on U.S. 78 eastbound near Howell Road around 10 p.m. Sunday. That’s when Johnson lost control of his Chrysler Pacifica and crashed in the woods near Stone Mountain Park.
"When officers arrived on the scene, the two female passengers were located inside the car,” Parish said. “The 15-year-old was deceased and the 11-year-old was transported in critical condition,” says Parish.
Two boys, ages 8 and 9, were also in the vehicle, but they weren't seriously injured.
Police say Johnson could not find his cellphone after the wreck and walked nearly a mile with his boys to the Metro Café diner in Gwinnett County to find help.
"He told me that he just had an accident and he did not know what happened with his two little girls that were left in the car," diner manager Mario Castellanos told Channel 2 Action News.
Police are not releasing the 11-year-old girl’s name. Both boys were taken to the hospital. One was released right away, while the other left the next morning.
