Freezing rain and sleet are in the forecast for Friday in parts of the Metro area and throughout North Georgia.

Georgia Department of Transportation spokesperson, Mark McKinnon, tells WSB "GDOT crews will be out in force to pre-treat and treat roadways with a salt and gravel mixture."

McKinnon said crews have already begun spraying a new salt-brine onto some roads across extreme north Georgia.

The salt-brine is designed to keep the ice from bonding with the road surface, which happened in the winter storm of 2011.

After that storm, the DOT added 11 sand and salt barns along interstates around metro Atlanta so their trucks can have easy and quick access to them.

McKinnon urges motorist to be careful and slow down.  GDOT also warns drivers to be aware of black ice conditions on surfaces like bridge decks and entrances and exit ramps.

Motorists can call 511 before traveling to find out what road conditions are like.  And, if you notice icy roadways, be sure to call and let GDOT know the location.  This will help other motorists and allow crews to treat the area.

"Anything that may look a little bit wet, be very cautious because it could be ice," say McKinnon.

GDOT crews plan to work around the clock starting at 4 a.m. on Friday and plan to work 12-hour shifts to ensure that roadways across the state are clear.
