While Hall County teachers greeted their returning students with open arms Tuesday, those same students were also greeted by Hall County sheriff’s deputies.
It was the first day back for those students since the school massacre in Newton, Conn.
To make parents feel a little easier, a deputy was assigned to each of the school district’s 33 schools on the first day back.
"We knew that this would be a nervous day for parents when they brought their children back to school,” said Hall County Superintendent William Schofield. “We have been working behind the scenes ever since that terrible Friday that Newtown happened just to ensure we had everything in place."
The district has not determined how long the deputies will remain on campus. There is a resource officer in middle and high schools in Hall County, but not elementary schools.
Schofield says the district spent the winter break reviewing its security plans. All school doors, except for the main entrance will be locked as soon as school starts.
A Gwinnett County police officer was assigned to every school in the district following the Newton shootings. Those students return to class today as do students in Rockdale and Coweta Counties.
