Wife of a man killed by cops during drug raid is now behind bars

By Pete Combs

Hiram, GA —

When drug task force agents raided a house at 3851 Nebo Road in Hiram October 17, they were looking for 47-year old Brenda Van Cleve, suspected of trafficking in methamphetamine.

“She is the wife of the late Danny Hammett,” said Cpl. Ashley Henson at the Paulding County Sheriff’s Dept.

Hammett squared off against members of the Haralson-Paulding Drug Task Force in a darkened hallway of the home during that raid, armed only with a can of pepper spray. After being ordered several times to drop the shiny black can of spray and refusing, Henson said Hammett was shot dead by the law officers.

Tuesday, Van Cleve was arrested by Forest Park Police and members of the US Marshals Fugitive Squad at the Paisley Park Apartments on South Avenue in Forest Park. There, they found more drugs, Henson said.

“This secondary arrest basically solidifies that Ms. Van Cleve is dealing narcotics and has been,” he said.

Van Cleve and her 21-year old son, James Eason, were booked on charges of possessing methamphetamines, Schedule IV narcotics marijuana and drug paraphernalia. Both are now being held in the Forest Park Jail, awaiting transfer to the Paulding County Jail.
