Teen discovers burglar in home

By Andrew Spencer

Dekalb County, GA —

A 15-year-old girl comes face-to-face with a burglar.

"She was terrified," her mother, Christin Street, tells Channel 2 Action News.

The man found Emily Street hiding in the bathroom, where she was text messaging her mother for help.

"When he opened the door," says Emily, "he just said, 'Oh,' and then he ran out as fast as he could, 'cause I had my phone in my hand." The 15-year-old followed him. "...and then he's like, 'Don't say or do anything, or I'm gonna shoot you.'"

When Emily's mother got the message calling for help, she was getting her hair cut. Because Christin Street was in Buckhead, her call 9-1-1 went to Fulton County dispatch instead of DeKalb County, where their house is. Waiting to be transferred was too much for the frantic mother.

"It was really frustrating," says Street. "I kept hanging up and trying to call back and hanging up and trying to call back."

Street says the burglary has changed her family's views on gun control.

"I've just always been one of those people that just thinks you don't need a gun in the house," she says. "Now ... we're going to get a gun."
