Thanks to an alert neighbor, Gwinnett County Police may have broken up a burglary ring.
When a resident saw suspicious activity at his neighbor's house on Inverloch Circle, he called police.
"The neighbor and the victim herself were very quick in calling the police. The police actually got to the residence as the suspects were still trying to force entry into the back door," said Corporal Jake Smith.
The victim, Lori Goodell, tells Channel 2 Action News she was at home at the time. The suspects apparently rang the door several times, but when she didn't answer, they assumed she wasn't home and started to break in.
"He knocked on that French door," said Goodell. "I just said, 'Get the heck out of my house. What are you doing?'"
Police arrived soon after and arrested one of the suspects who was wearing a red jumpsuit.
"I work hard. This is my stuff. You're not just gonna come in and get it. And how stupid are you? You're sneaking into my house in the daylight, plus wearing a red jumpsuit."
Smith tells WSB they believe these suspects, mostly teenagers, are responsible for other burglaries in the area.
"We could potentially be going back two or three years with this particular ring as far as burglaries they're responsible for," said Smith. "If we go back an extended amount of time, if we can tie burglaries going back even several years to this same group of suspects, we may be into the dozens."
Police are still searching for three suspects but believe they're close to finding them. All, except one 16 year old, are 17, and will be tried as adults.
"They are charged with burglary. Additionally, the gang unit has been investigating these same suspects for gang-related acts. They potentially will be charged under the Gang Act with some additional felonies as well," said Smith.
