The former president of a Gwinnett County booster club has turned himself in.

Gwinnett County Police Corporal Jake Smith says Steven Brindle is accused of stealing thousands of dollars from the Mountain View Athletic Association's accounts.

"We have several charges that could be legitimate and then we have several that are probably not legitimate: purchases from a tobacco store, purchases from a store that sells dresses.  Just on the surface, those are gonna require some justification," said Smith.

Smith says the charges ranged from as little as two dollars to more than a thousand. He collected everything from concert tickets to donations for the Save the Manatees organization.

The funds are supposed to pay for equipment and uniforms for kids who play at Rabbit Hill Park in Dacula.

"The association is trying to account for $45,000 and this list they've provided to the police department accounts for almost $25,000 with various transactions," said Smith.

Police say the thefts began in August 2012 and continued until February.

"He was the president at the time of the association, and I don't know specifically what checks they have in place or who is responsible for the accounting.  We are aware that money was moved between various funds belonging to the association and that might have contributed to the delay in the discovery of this large loss," said Smith.

So far, Brindle has been charged with theft by conversion.
