Police have arrested a high school drama teacher in Canton for an apparent sex crime.

Investigators believe a teacher at Creekview High School, 31-year-old Matthew Tamanini, had a four-month sexual relationship with a 16-year-old student. Tamanini now faces two felony charges of sexual assault against a person in custody.

"It's the same law that applies to a doctor and a patient or a police officer and a person in custody," says Lt. Jay Baker with the Cherokee County Sheriff's Office. "This was a consensual relationship but ... obviously, it is unlawful for a teacher to have any type of sexual relationship with a student."

"The charges stem from at least two incidents that occurred on campus," says Baker.

Cobb County School District hired Tamanini to work at Creekview in May 2007. Pending an internal investigation, the district says he will be working at a "non-school work site" -- such as an administration office, warehouse, or maintenance facility.
