Cobb police kill man with gun in standoff

By Mark Alewine and Jay Black

Cobb County police shot and killed a man who would not back down during a standoff at an apartment complex Tuesday night.

Cobb County Police Sgt. Dana Pierce told News/Talk WSB's Mark Alewine the man was running around naked with a gun. The man, whose name has not been released, threatened officers on the scene during the standoff.

“Officers had to take that immediate action and stop that aggressive act,” Sgt. Pierce said. “Officers were confronted by him with a weapon. It was at that point when officers used that force necessary to stop that aggressive act.”

Residents at the Riverside House Apartments near Windy Hill and Powers Ferry Roads were evacuated around 7:40 p.m. and kept out of their homes for hours. No one else was hurt.

“I’m in a state of shock,” a resident told Channel 2 Action News. “It’s scary to think that someone that’s your neighbor did something like this.”

Per protocol, the officer who shot the suspect has been placed on administrative leave. The deadly altercation is being investigated by Cobb County Internal Affairs.
