Cobb Co. commission takes district maps to court

By Amanda Moyer

A problem drawing up County Commission maps could end up costing Cobb County taxpayers a lot of money.  A federal court judge has asked for responses to a new map by Tuesday afternoon in an effort to get the map completed by the end of the week.

The issue was argued before the entire county commission Monday in federal court.  Marietta lawyer Jonathan Crumly isn't on the ballot and has no desire to run for office. However, Crumly thinks it's his civic duty to challenge the Legislature. He tells Channel 2 Action News new districts should be drawn up based on the 2010 census.

"When I found out what happened in the state House at the end of the session with the Cobb district maps, I realized if something doesn't happen soon then it's going to cost the Cobb County taxpayers for or four or $500,000 for a special election," said Crumly.

That's because some commissioners would end up representing more people than others, diluting the one person, one vote concept.  Not acting might have delayed this July's election, forcing taxpayers to pay for the special election.

If the maps are out by the end of the week, there will be no problems with candidates qualifying ahead of the May 24 deadline. The regular election is scheduled to take place July 31.
