If negotiations between the City of Atlanta and the Falcons over new stadium goes south, then the team might be able to find a new palace.

Clayton County says it has plenty of land just begging for a new stadium.

"There's almost 200 acres virtually untouched inside the perimeter,” Clayton County economic development chief Grant Wainscott told Channel 2 Action News. “That's a big deal for us.”

Clayton’s Commission Chairman Jeff Turner confirms the county wants the team if they want to leave Atlanta, but no official talks are repoprted.

"I'm sure the city of Atlanta and Mayor Kasim Reed want to keep the Falcons downtown. But I want to offer Clayton County as a viable option," said Turner.

Turner says the county is getting a proposal ready if plans fall through to replace the Georgia Dome .

The proposed site is currently a wooded area just east of Old Dixie Highway and inside Interstate 285.

Right now, it’s just being used for illegal dumping. But county officials see that pile of trash as a potential gold mine.

"We have layered a great number of incentives...on this entire area," said Wainscott.

The proposed area is the site of the former city of Mountain View. The area already qualifies for plenty of tax breaks.

"We're interested in that economic growth that having a stadium would give us. We need that boost," said Turner.

The infrastructure is also in place. Projects to relocate Old Dixie Highway and improve the road to Interstate 75 and the Maynard Jackson International Terminal are already approved.
The new stadium would still have an Atlanta address and would be visible from I-285.

The Falcons reaffirmed their statement that they are still concentrating all attention downtown.

A Falcons spokeswoman told the AJC they have not heard anything from Clayton County about a new stadium.

“We haven’t talked to the Falcons,” Turner conceded. “We have not reached out to anybody. We’re waiting to see how the negotiations with the city of Atlanta will turn out.”

Clayton County would have some competition if the Falcons relocate.

Rep. Alisha Thomas Morgan, D-Austell, said the stadium would be a great addition to redevelopment in the Six Flags area of Cobb County. Other metro locations have been mentioned in years past as possible stadium sites.
