Cherokee Co. SWAT sniper kills teen during standoff

Cherokee Co. teen killed during standoff

By Jennifer Griffies

WOODSTOCK —

A sniper with the Cherokee County SWAT team shot and killed a 16-year-old boy during a standoff Tuesday night.

Sheriff Roger Garrison told News/Talk WSB authorities had no choice but to shoot the teen who was threatening his mother and would not back down during a standoff.

The mother called 911 just before 6 p.m. Tuesday night because her son was waiving a .357 magnum around their house in the Eagle Watch subdivision off Towne Lake Parkway.

Deputies were able to get the mom out of the house, but the teen would not follow, said Garrison.

"The deputies surrounded the house, called negotiators in,” said Garrison. “They attempted to make contact via telephone and those negotiations broke down."

The SWAT team was also called out and negotiations were not successful. Things started to get hostile as officers moved in on the teen.

"At some point in time, the young man either fired a shot through the plate glass window in the door or either pushed the gun through the door in a threatening manner toward the officers,” said Garrison.

That’s when a sniper stationed across the street shot one round and hit the teen in the stomach, said Garrison.

The teen was taken to Kennestone Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

The deputy who fired the shot is on routine administrative leave pending the outcome of an investigation.
