Butt Ban on Tybee?

Tybee Island may ban butts on the beach--cigarette butts, that is.

A draft proposal presented to the Tybee Island City Council bans all tobacco and nicotine, including e-cigarettes, in all public beach areas unless specifically exempted by the city manager.

Councilman Rob Callahan says a ban would cut down on cigarette butts littering the sand of Georgia's largest public beach.  It's estimated up to a million cigarette butts are discarded on Tybee beaches each year.

The Savannah Morning News reports the council's put off action for now to check whether the current litter law can solve the problem.  If they reconsider, Callahan says the smoking ban could take effect next year.
