Woman survives murder-suicide attempt

By Richard Sangster

Lithia Springs, GA —

A Lithia Spring woman undergoes surgery after she was a victim of a murder-suicide attempt.

The murder suicide was sparked by the couple's break-up. It happened in the parking lot of Arnita Barton's apartment complex off Thornton Road.

Douglas Co. Sheriff's Lt. Bruce Ferguson told WSB's Richard Sangster at the scene, the man was waiting for her to come home and ambushed Barton, 32. The man, who's name has not been released, then turned the gun on himself.

Barton, shot at least three times, is in Grady Memorial Hospital where she underwent surgery.

The man, a Fulton Co. Sheriff's deputy trainee, had been with that department less than three months.
