The messy commute on a stretch of Clairmont Road damaged after a major water main break over the weekend could continue until Thursday.
Repairs have been ongoing since the water main broke early Saturday in the 3900 block of Clairmont near Chamblee, damaging a two-block stretch of the road and sidewalks.
“We are attempting to finish before the rains come on Thursday,” DeKalb County spokesman Burke Brennan said.
By late Saturday afternoon crews from the DeKalb County Department of Watershed Management had shut off water service to several hundred DeKalb County homes in the area, Brennan said. Crews worked through the night to seal the break in the pipe, which released so much water that it damaged the foundation of the two west lanes of the four-lane road.
The two east-bound lanes will temporarily serve east-west traffic as the road is being repaired, Burke said.
Water service was restored by 4:30 a.m. Sunday. Brennan said the break did not disrupt air travel at the airport.
The break occurred in an old line that was scheduled to be replaced as part of the county’s $1.35 billion capital improvement plan. More than 80 sewer and water upgrades are planned as part of the project over the next five years, Brennan said.
