View from underneath Mitchell Street bridge after fire damage the structure during a Tuesday afternoon blaze.
Martin Luther King, Jr. Drive between Centennial Olympic Park Dr. and Northside Dr. remains closed today as a result of the Tuesday afternoon fire at the Mitchell Street bridge.
The bridge, which had reopened August 23 following a four-year rebuilding project, crosses the Gulch just south of Philips Arena, and connects Castleberry Hill to Northside Drive. The rebuilding project totaled $8.8 million.
The fire started in an area where homeless people live, and a cause has not been determined. Concrete tumbled off a section of the bridge that had been stressed by the heat from the flames.
Richard Mendoza, commissioner, Atlanta Department of Public Works told WSB's Richard Sangster that engineers will inspect the bridge, "We're going to do a structural assessment of the bridge, to insure that it's safe," he said. "Last night, of course with the fire has potential to compromise the structural integrity of the bridge. Engineers from the city, and our partners from GDOT, do a thorough inspection to absolutely make sure (the bridge) is safe, before we reopen it."
Inspection crews told Sangster there is no timetable for reopening of the bridge.
