A state lawmaker wants to make sure no more Georgia students become sickened from carbon monoxide.

Rep. Sheila Jones (D-Atlanta) says what happened at Finch Elementary, where more than 30 students and teachers suffered from carbon monoxide poisoning , should be a wake- up call. 

“We could have lost lives… we didn’t.  This was a wake-up call.  This is the time for us to step up and do something about it,” she tells WSB’s Sandra Parrish.

Jones has introduced legislation that would require all schools to install carbon monoxide detectors by July 1.

“So if this should happen in any other schools, they will be alerted that this has taken place… and they will be able to take proper precautions,” she says.

Jones says she was surprised to learn that current law only requires schools to have smoke detectors.

The leak at Finch was linked to two maintenance workers who failed to reopen a valve on the school’s furnace following an inspection several days prior.
