The Bartow County School Board member accused of running over a student in a Wal-Mart parking lot, has resigned.
The attorney for Angela Cornett tells WSB, "we submitted Mrs. Cornett's resignation, today to Governor Nathan Deal and to Superintendent Dr. John Harper."
Cornett's attorney, John T. Mroczko, says "Mrs. Cornett decided for personal and family reasons that it was time for her to step aside. And, she felt that now was the best time."
On Friday, Cornett was arrested for misdemeanor reckless conduct after video from a security camera shows her white Lexus SUV striking 17-year old Emily Gulledge in the leg at the Cartersville Wal-Mart parking.
The teen told police she was trying to save the space for a friend.
Gulledge was not seriously injured during the impact, but investigators photographed the tire marks on her pant leg.
Meanwhile, Cornett's lawyer tells WSB the teen leaned into his client's car to cause the marks.
"My review of the videotape and conversations with my client, it does not appear to happen the way the allegations have been made against my client," say Attorney Mroczko.
Cornett's attorney argues that the teenager stepped in front of his client's car and was not struck by the former Bartow County School Board member.
Attorney Mroczko says Cornett's resignation is effective immediately.
The process has begun to hold a special election to fill Cornett's seat and is expect to take place in March.
