Audit: DeKalb schools didn’t make needed office cuts

The DeKalb County school district was supposed to fire 150 positions from the central office in 2010. But an audit presented to the school board shows that has not happened.

Channel 2 Action News first reported the audit. It shows salaries for the district’s central office from 2010 to 2011 exceeded the budget by more than $20 million. Meanwhile, other workers in the district were losing their jobs, parents taxes are increasing and so are class sizes.

The district was supposed to save $11.5 million when the cuts were approved two years ago. But no one knows how many positions were eliminated. The finance department told auditors there were 148 cuts. Human resources says it was only 109.

Auditors also found the school system inflated the average salary to make it look like more money was being saved by the cuts. Auditors believe the district over-estimated by more than $1.8 million.

The audit also found policies not being followed and it raised questions about cash being moved between accounts.

The school district has no comment.

The district voted to fire more than 400 people this summer and cut almost $80 million from the budget because of a shortfall.
