Atlanta City Council votes on new parking vendor

By Marcy Williams

Members of the Atlanta City Council vote today on a new vendor to take over street parking management.

Chicago-based SP Plus Municipal Services projects it can raise even more money than PARKatlanta but without aggressive ticketing.  It relies on smartphone technology to alert drivers time's running out on the meter.  Drivers can pay for more time through an app.  The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports SP Plus estimates it can earn $13.5 million annually with $7 million going to the city of Atlanta.

SP Plus would manage 2,400 metered spaces.  Solar-powered screens will be in color to reduce glare.

"We are very much encouraged by the technology enhancements," Atlanta Public Works Commissioner Richard Mendoza tells the AJC.

Mendoza says the city plans to rename the program to erase any PARKatlanta stigma.

"There will be a total re-branding of our street parking program," he tells the Atlanta paper.

Residents complained frequently about over-aggressive ticketing by PARKatlanta.  To appease citizens, the city will now take over the appeals process to reduce how many cases end up in Municipal Court.
