Atlanta-bound Delta flight diverted because of odor

By Judd Hickinbotham

ATLANTA —

The pilot of a Delta flight headed from Puerto Rico to Atlanta was forced to land in Florida because of a strange smell in the cabin.

Some passengers tell Channel 2 Action News there were some jumpy moments on board Sunday's flight after they began to smell smoke and gasoline.

They say the pilot made the announcement over the intercom.

"He was pretty nervous when he announced there was a problem, and we had to make an emergency landing in Ft. Lauderdale," says one passenger. "And then we started to make a very steep descent, which was a little scary."

The plane landed without incident 10 to 15 minutes after the announcement.

Passengers finally made it to Hartsfield-Jackson Airport about seven hours after taking off in Puerto Rico. The non-stop flight was scheduled to take about three hours.

Officials are still trying to figure out what caused the smell.
