Students and parents are on edge after a shooting broke out at a southeast Atlanta middle school Thursday.

ATLANTA —

The Atlanta Public School system says metal detectors were not working at Price Middle School in south Atlanta the day of a shooting that injured one student. And a new report shows it wasn’t the first time the metal detectors were ignored.

District officials released a statement late Friday that said: "After completing an investigation into the use of metal detectors at Price Middle School, we have learned that the detectors were not operable on Jan. 31, the day of the school shooting. We have also learned that there has been limited use of the detectors at Price this school year."

The statement says one metal detector is now up and running at the school, while a second should be operable next week.

"Today [Friday], students passed through a metal detector before entering the school. Students were also scanned with security wands," the statement said.

The shooting victim, 14-year-old Telvis Douglas, was released from the hospital after being shot in the head Thursday. The name of the suspect has not been released.

Students told Channel 2 Action News the metal detectors at Price Middle School were pushed to the side and rarely used, if ever.
