Sunday was a nice change of pace for the middle of winter, but today is a different story.

Atlanta started with a flood watch, but now just a lot of rain.

WSB meteorologist Kirk Mellish says the rain will increase overnight.

“A few scattered showers will develop during the day. They become more widespread during the early evening, leading to a widespread soaking over night,” Mellish says.

The forecast is calling for at least inch and a half of rain for metro Atlanta. But the real heavy stuff will stay south, with three inches of rain possible south of Columbus and Macon.

The soil is very saturated and rivers and streams are already running high after last week’s showers.

“For Metro Atlanta minor routine flooding of the usual suspect creeks is possible, nothing threatening” says Mellish.

Mellish says temperatures won’t change a whole lot today, with chilly highs near 50 and lows 41-44.

The rain will start to diminish Tuesday morning and will be gone for the afternoon. High temperatures will be in the upper 50s, with lows 37-40.

Wednesday is setting up to be the nicest day of the week. Mellish is calling for plenty of sun with highs in the mid-50s and lows 34-37.

But those temperatures will fall by the end of the work week. On Thursday and Friday, Mellish says there will be a mix of clouds and sun with highs in the upper 40s and lows 28-33. The weekend will be even colder and flurries are not out of the question Saturday, says Mellish.
