After deadly wreck, a safe holiday on Lake Lanier

Increased patrols on Lake Lanier appear to be paying off a little more than two weeks after two brothers were killed in an accident involving an accused drunk boater.

13-year-old Griffin Prince and his 9-year-old brother Jake were killed when a fishing boat rammed a pontoon boat carrying their family June 18th.

Police presence was increased on the lake following the accident and it looks like everyone got the message to leave the booze on the shore.

The Georgia Department of Natural Resources told News/Talk WSB there were no boating accidents or drownings on Lake Lanier Wednesday. Rangers only arrested one person for boating under the influence.

Rangers did issue six lesser citations to boaters.

“We look for those things that might cause an accident and try to take care of those,” Lt. Col Jeff Weaver with the DNR tells News/Talk WSB. “People acting recklessly out on the water is going to draw our attention.”

Col. Weaver says Lanier has been a very busy place since the holiday fell in the middle of the week.

“It’s more like 8-10 days of constant traffic (on the lake) since people are taking off in the middle of the week,” said Col. Weaver.

Law enforcement will continue blanketing the lake this holiday weekend.

The DNR has four vessels patrolling Lanier. Hall County is operating a jet ski and a marine rescue unit, while Gwinnett County and Forsyth County authorities each have two boats on the water.
