A recent study found out what’s really inside those chicken nuggets. Yeah, turns out it’s not all chicken.
Researchers at the University of Mississippi took it upon themselves to figure out what exactly was in the popular fast food item and tested two nuggets from two different national fast food chains. (Via KOLO)
The results were published online in the American Journal of Medicine, and appropriately titled “The Autopsy of Chicken Nuggets Reads ‘Chicken Little.’” Why? Because, as it turns out, there’s very little chicken in chicken nuggets.
They found the nuggets contained 50 percent or less of actual chicken meat. The rest was a mix of fat, blood vessels, nerves, cartilage and even pieces of bone. (Via CBS)
Sounds delicious… A doctor involved in the study told KFVS this isn’t an attack on the food industry, but rather a way to encourage people to be more aware of what they’re eating.
“There’s all kinds of random stuff in there that is not chicken meat. The problem is, is it gets adulterated.” (Via KFVS)
But this recent find isn’t exactly surprising many people.
The media has remained skeptical of meat ingredients for some time. Several reports circled about the infamous “pink slime” that was basically like a paste some business used to make chicken and beef products. (Via Politico)
The concern was that the paste was exposed to ammonia in order eliminate harmful bacteria — a method not everyone was on board with.
But not all nuggets are created equal. Restaurants are required to post nutritional information about their foods, and some fast food chains do claim to use 100% breast meat chicken. (Via McDonald’s)
The researchers chose not to reveal which fast food chains they tested the chicken from, but it’s safe to say we’ll probably think twice before ordering those again.
