More arrests could come in kidnapping of North Carolina man

Federal prosecutors say there are more people involved in the kidnapping of a North Carolina man who was held in an Atlanta apartment for days before being rescued by the FBI.

Frank Janssen was abducted from his Wake Forest home April 5.

The plot is believed to have been orchestrated by Kelvin Melton, a high-ranking member of the “Bloods” gang who is serving time for murder.  Janssen’s daughter is the prosecutor who tried his case.

Five of the suspects arrested in the kidnapping including Jenna Martin, Tiana Maynard, Jevante Price, Michael Gooden and Clifton Roberts went before a federal magistrate in Atlanta Tuesday, and all were denied bond except for Martin who waived her bond hearing and will be sent to North Carolina.

Price, Gooden and Roberts will be back in federal court in Atlanta next week to face a probable cause hearing.  Maynard waived her probable cause hearing and will also be sent to North Carolina.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Ryan Buchanan disclosed the alleged roles of each of the defendants in court: Maynard was in possession of a cell phone used to send text messages to Janssen’s wife; Roberts was driving a vehicle with both Maynard and Martin that contained a pistol, pick and shovel believed to be part of a plan to kill and bury Janssen;  Price disclosed the location of the apartment of where Janssen was being held and also implicated Gooden saying both were supposed to watch over Janssen the night he was rescued.

Defense attorneys for each of the defendants denied their clients played a direct role in the kidnapping.

Buchanan also told the magistrate that there are several more suspects who remain at large.
