Martin family attorney wants Ga.’s ‘Stand Your Ground’ law gone

A cousin of Trayvon Martin and the family’s attorney will join in efforts to repeal Georgia’s 2006 Stand Your Ground law.

Patrick Fulton and attorney Benjamin Crump will participate in a town hall meeting sponsored by Sen. Vincent Fort (D-Atlanta) tonight at the First Iconium Baptist Church at 7 p.m.

“We’re going to fight as hard as we can, focused on the legislative session, to repeal the Stand Your Ground Law in Georgia,” he tells WSB’s Sandra Parrish.

Fort says the recent death of an elderly man with Alzheimer’s in Walker County is a good example of why a repeal is necessary.

“I think the person who shot him ought to be charged with a crime, but it’s exactly why we don’t need a Stand Your Ground Law,” he says.

Last month, 72-year-old Ronald Westbrook was shot to death after wandering into the yard of Joe Hendrix in the wee hours of the morning and repeatedly knocking at his door.

Sheriff’s officials say Hendrix confronted Westbrook out in the yard and fired at him after first repeatedly shouting verbal commands.  Hendrix told investigators he feared for his safety as well as that of his fiancée.

Westbrook has not been charged and is said to be heartbroken over the shooting
