Man beaten during Falcons brawl now charged

James Lewis McCoy claims he had no choice to grab his knife and stab the man that was beating him after the Falcons NFC Championship game.

But police see it differently.

McCoy, 46, is now charged with two counts of aggravated assault for the Jan. 20 stabbing, which injured a 35-year-old man.

A YouTube video shows McCoy being beaten during the brawl outside the Georgia Dome. McCoy says he feared for his life.

“Never said a word to the guy, don’t even know the guy,” McCoy told Channel 2 Action News last month. “He hit me, and once he hit me, the mob started beating me.”

“I reached in and I grabbed my knife, and I started trying to cut my way out, trying to save my life,” he said. “They still found a way to get my knife out of my hand and continued to beat me.”

But McCoy turned himself into the Fulton County jail Thursday night.

“We’re not sure why Mr. McCoy seems to be singled out, doing whatever he could to defend himself,” McCoy’s attorney, Mac Pilgrim, told Channel 2.

He is scheduled to make his first appearance at 11 a.m. Friday.
