Safety changes for Dallas Highway in Cobb

Drivers along Dallas Highway near Marietta are noticing some big changes along the way and there are more to come – all in the name of safety.

Cars come by so fast here in front of The Avenue shopping center in West Cobb County that they almost sound like they're flying and that's one of the reasons this intersection has been a big safety problem for County Commission Chairman Tim Lee. On average, there are nine serious accidents along this stretch of road every year. Since The Avenue opened in 2003, two have been fatal.

"Hopefully, it's been taken care of," Lee told WSB's Pete Combs.

That's because the county has installed turn-on-arrow-only lights on Dallas Highway in front of the Avenue and at Casteel Road nearby. And that's not all, said Lee. Cobb DOT engineers are planning another turn-on-arrow only signal at Bob Cox Road and Dallas Highway, approximately a half-mile from The Avenue.

In addition, the Georgia Dept. of Transportation will soon lengthen the left turn lanes at The Avenue and Casteel Road. Lee said Cobb County has also petitioned GDOT to lower the speed limit in the area from 55 to 45.

"It's easy to lower (the speed limit)," said Lee. "Getting folks to practice the lower speed is the hard part."
