NFL owners to vote on new Falcons' stadium

It's the last vote needed for the new Falcons stadium and it's set for later today.

The NFL team owners, all 32 of them, are meeting today in Boston will much on their agenda.

Among the items they will discuss and vote upon is whether the league will contribute to help build the team's new, retractable roof stadium.

The $200 million will come from a program meant to help support new stadium construction or renovation.

The vote is expected to be a done deal since the Atlanta City County, the Georgia World Congress Center Authority and Invest Atlanta have all voted to approve the arrangement.

A new stadium would require $200 million in public funding.  The NFL will contribute another $200 million and the Falcons will be responsible for the rest of the price tag.

If the league does, in fact, provide the funding, then ground should be broken on the new site by next summer.

A place for the new dome is expected to be adjacent to the current Georgia Dome, but it is not known whether it will be to the north or south.

Once that site is determined and ground is broken, the new stadium is expected to be open and ready for business by the start of the 2017 NFL season.

The Falcons hope a new dome will help them land a future Super Bowl.  They are also hopeful a new stadium will bring them the BCS Championship Game and, perhaps, a Major League soccer franchise.
