New bridge in Gwinnett soon to be open

If you travel anywhere around Hwy 316 in Lawrenceville, you’ve likely noticed a lot of progress on the two new intersection projects.
The new overpass at State Route 20 is expected to open to traffic before Memorial Day.
Teri Pope with the Georgia Department of Transportation says while the Collins Hill overpass has been up longer, delays on traffic signal poles there pushed much the work to the SR 20 project.
“We still have to stripe it and we’ll still have to finish putting up the signage and finish the ties-ins and top State Route 20 as it approaches this bridge,” she tells WSB’s Sandra Parrish.
Pope says the new bridge will have three lanes open in both directions as well as two left turn lanes on each side.
Once traffic begins using it, work to finish digging out the rest of Hwy 316 below it will begin.
“There’s about a 600-foot section that we haven’t dug out yet and that’s because traffic for State Route 20 is using it,” says Pope.
The Collins Hill overpass is expected to open to traffic before the fall semester begins at Georgia Gwinnett College which sits on the other side of Hwy 316.
The entire project is set to be completed by May 2016.
