What did Todd Grigg have in mind?

Three off-duty Cherokee County deputies directing traffic as students arrived at the Cherokee Charter School on Sixes Road Wednesday morning spotted a man who simply looked out of place, according to Lt. Jay Baker.

Grigg, 31, had long blond hair, a beard and was wearing leather biker clothes. He was standing on campus, looking so out of place that one of the three deputies decided to approach him.

“He walked away from the deputy even after the deputy told him to stop. Then he began to run,” Baker said.

Another deputy jumped in his squad car and chased the suspect down, according to Baker.

When they searched Grigg, deputies found several knives – one of which was 8-inches long – leather gloves and a BB gun. Baker said the gun “looked exactly like a semi-automatic pistol.”

Grigg was taken into custody for questioning. Baker said, thanks to the fast-acting off-duty deputies, no students at the school on Sixes Rd. were ever in danger.

It is the second time in less than 24 hours an armed man has been arrested on a metro area campus. Tuesday, 20-year old Michael Brandon Hill was arrested after slipping in the front door of the McNair Discovery Learning Academy in Decatur and exchanging gunfire with police before surrendering.

After three bomb-sniffing dogs alerted police to Hill’s vehicle, parked in front of the school, it was blown up by explosives experts after students were evacuated through a hole cut in a schoolyard fence. No one was hurt in that incident. Hill told investigators he was “off his meds.”
