Land purchase deadline looming for Falcons' stadium

The deal for the Georgia World Congress Center to buy land south of the Georgia Dome in order to build a new football stadium for the Atlanta Falcons is still in play, although a Falcons-imposed deadline of Thursday is looming.

"We're working very diligently and we aren't very far apart," said Lloyd Hawk, chairman of the board of trustees at Friendship Baptist Church, one of two churches that have until Thursday to decide whether top sell their buildings to make room for the new football stadium just south of the Georgia World Congress Center.

Tuesday, however, the World Congress Center board meets to decide whether to let the Falcons test a second site, just north of the Georgia Dome.

As one source close to the deal told WSB's Pete Combs, the closer Thursday's deadline approaches, the less likely it is that a deal will be finalized on the south plot of land. The GWCC owns the other plot, where the Yellow Parking lot is now, just north of the Dome.

Making it clear that this is fourth and short, the source said once the deadline passes, there will likely be no going back to negotiations for the south-side parcel.
