Hispanic members of community reluctant to report crimes

After a recent rash of robberies targeting Hispanic victims, the Gwinnett County Police Department is working to reassure that community it need not be afraid to report a crime.

In the last four months, 65 robberies have been reported in two areas along South Norcross-Tucker Road and Jimmy Carter Boulevard.  Most are areas with apartment complexes that have high concentrations of Hispanic residents.

Sgt. Edward Restrepo says the number of robberies is likely only a fraction of the actual number because many victims fear deportation if they report a crime.

"That's a big hindrance to us because if we were able to find out the description, we would be able to tell if we're dealing with individuals or different crews," he tells WSB's Sandra Parrish.

Restrepo says two weeks ago, a victim did report the crime which led to the arrests of two suspects.

Police are now distributing fliers amongst Hispanic businesses urging people not to fear them.

"I can assure you that we're not going to ask their immigration status if they're the victim of a crime," he says.
