Gwinnett teen dies in bike accident, no charges expected

No charges are anticipated in a bicycle accident Wednesday at claimed the life of a 13-year-old Lawrenceville boy.

Gwinnett Police Cpl. Ed Ritter says Justin Shaw was riding his bike downhill on Woodstream Drive when he failed to stop at the stop sign.

“He intended to turn left on Club Drive and he didn’t stop for the stop sign; in doing so, he pulled out in front of a couple vehicles that were traveling on Club Drive,” he tells WSB’s Sandra Parrish.

Ritter says after Shaw was hit by the first vehicle, he was thrown into the path of oncoming traffic and was hit by a second vehicle.

Shaw died several hours later at the hospital.

Ritter says he doesn’t anticipate any charges being brought against either driver.

“The cars both had the right of way,” he says.  “The bicyclist, even being 13-years-old, was required to stop at that stop sign (and) he didn’t stop… and pulled right out into traffic.”
