Gwinnett County, GA
Gwinnett County has joined a suit with Spokane, Washington hoping to stop the control tower at Briscoe Field from closing due to FAA cuts caused by the sequester.
It was during the 1990’s Gwinnett entered into an agreement with the federal government to fund and operate the tower.
Commission Chair Charlotte Nash tells WSB’s Sandra Parrish she hopes that by joining the suit, it will hold the FAA to that commitment.
“The suit essentially is based on the idea that the FAA failed to follow some of its own procedures in terms of how they made the decisions on some of these towers,” she says.
Briscoe Field is among nearly 150 regional control towers set to close June 15.
But while Nash says it’s better to have a tower, she says the airport can manage without it if the suit fails.
“It operated for years without a tower (and) it operates some portion of everyday without the tower being manned,” she says.
