Gwinnett father charged in drug overdose of toddler

A Gwinnett County father is now charged in the suspicious death of his 2-year-old son who died of an overdose in April 2013.

Kurt Vanpool is charged with felony murder and cruelty to children in the second degree in the death of little Hunter Vanpool.

Gwinnett Police Cpl. Ed Ritter tells WSB’s Sandra Parrish the boy died after ingesting a lethal dose of oxycodone. “Investigators learned the child’s father obtained oxycodone and took some of the medication during the middle of the night,” he says. “Mr. Vanpool claimed that at some point during the night, Hunter was able to ingest some of the oxycodone and died.”

Ritter could not say why it took investigators so long to bring charges against Vanpool.

During his first court appearance Friday morning, Vanpool was ordered held without bond and appointed an attorney. He then told the judge he wanted to take a polygraph.
