Facebook to build data center in Newton County

Those Facebook videos and pictures you like to post may soon be stored in part of metro Atlanta. The company joined Gov. Nathan Deal and local leaders at the State Capitol to announce a new 1 million-square-foot data center will be built in Stanton Springs in Newton County.

“This data center will host many of those videos, photos, and news articles you see on your Facebook newsfeed every day. Once it becomes operational in 2020, it will help us continue to provide a great experience for people in Georgia and for people across the world,” says Rachel Peterson, Vice President Facebook’s Data Center Strategy.

The announcement has been a year in the making through a partnership with the state’s Department of Economic Development and the counties of Newton, Walton, Morgan, and Jasper.

Deal says it’s another example of economic growth in rural Georgia.

“We’re continuing to see projects of all types and of all sizes that are going to many diverse parts of the state of Georgia and that’s a good thing for our state,” he tells WSB’s Sandra Parrish.

The new data center is expected to employee 100 full-time workers.
