Elderly Carrollton couple scammed of $30,000

An 84-year-old Florida woman wins Powerball, but a Carrollton couple is fleeced in a lottery scam.

Carrollton Police tell the Times-Georgian, the elderly couple believed a letter, purporting to be from Publishers Clearing House, informing them they had won millions of dollars and a new car.  They wired or sent ten payments totaling $30,000 to claim their prize, only to discover they had been swindled.

Police suspect this scam originates in Jamaica.  The couple was warned they could not tell anyone or risk violating a confidentiality clause set forth by the Lottery Commission of North America.  There is no commission by that name.
