DeKalb County, GA - A group behind an effort to form a new city in south DeKalb County is a step closer to making that reality.
Jason Lary, president of the Stonecrest City alliance, tells WSB's Sandra Parrish a feasibility study is now underway by UGA's Carl Vinson Institute. He says the group raised the $30,000 necessary for the study to see if the new city would be viable.
"People in the southeast corridor are so excited by the opportunity of being self-governed and self-managed, that they contributed to our cause at each seminar," he says.
The new city would encompass 61-square miles and includes 77,000 residents and businesses. It would become DeKalb's largest city and the tenth largest in the state.
"Our number one reason for doing this is for economic development in this corridor," says Lary.
The area includes Stonecrest Mall and all the surrounding retail stores.
Once the study is complete, the proposal to incorporate would need approval by the State Legislature and then go before the voters in a referendum.
The alliance is holding monthly meetings on the third Tuesday of the month at the Stonecrest Library.
