A new sanitation pilot program is about to get underway in Dekalb county.  The program is to test consolidating collections of garbage, recycling and yard trimmings to one day per week.

28 thousand households in Dekalb are taking part in the program that will begin the week of April 28th.  Most of the households have already received a new 65 gallon roll cart along with information explaining the program.

"Everything that we pick up in Dekalb county sanitation will be picked up on the same day and that will be the same day that your current recycling and yard trimmings waste will be picked up," says Dekalb county spokesperson, Burke Brennan.

The pilot program will run for three months.  If the program goes well Breannan says the entire county could go to a once a week pick-up schedule.

He says it would be a while though because, "We want to make sure we are doing this the right way, we want to make sure that we study it and we work the bugs out of it."

Brennan says having a "one day a week" pick up would cut down labor costs but he does not expect any jobs would be lost.
