A shock at the top of Cobb County's Department of Public Safety. Director Jack Forsythe abruptly tendered his resignation Monday, citing what he says is a developing crisis within the police department.

Forsythe has been on the job for less than a year, but made it clear in his letter of resignation that he's had enough. In a letter to County Manager David Hankerson, Forsythe repeatedly referred to a looming manpower crisis within the Cobb County Police Department, one he predicted will be made much worse by the Braves Stadium set to open in 2017.

He also made repeated references to his stormy relationship with Hankerson, saying more than a dozen requests for additional manpower and funding were stonewalled over and over again, causing friction between the two government officials and leading to Hankerson's threats – veiled and unveiled – to fire him.

Forsythe said his resignation is effective one year from the day he took office, Jan. 21.
