Updates to earlier story--
A Gwinnett County police officer shoots and kills a bank robber just minutes after he held up a Wells Fargo Branch on Lawrenceville Hwy.
Police have identified the suspect as 24-year-old John Schneider of Lawrenceville and says he used an Airsoft gun to rob the bank just after it opened Monday morning.
Cpl. Ed Ritter says Scheider then fled across the street and down Bethesda Church Road where he was confronted by an officer who attempted to arrest him behind a nearby church.
“There was some type of confrontation between the two of them where the suspect hit the officer over the head with the gun that he was armed with; the officer was then forced to shoot the suspect,” he says.
Ritter says the suspect died at the scene and the officer was taken to the hospital for injuries he sustained but is expected to be alright.
No one was injured at the bank which has apparently been robbed several times in recent years.
Amanda Dansereau lives across the street from the church and heard the gunshots. She tells WSB’s Sandra Parrish that unfortunately police activity is nothing new for the area.
“The gas station across the street gets robbed and this whole street gets block; there’s car crashes that happen down the street because people go too fast around the turns… so you kind of get used to it,” she says.
