Atlanta clergy oppose gun bill

Nearly two dozen members of the clergy protest a mega gun bill outside the state Capitol Monday morning.

The measure, which is now a combination of two House and Senate bills, would allow churches to decide whether  licensed guns owners could bring their firearms onto church property.

“We did not ask to have guns in churches and synagogues and this is the last place on Earth that people can go to get away from the violence that is so prevalent in our world,” says Rabbi Pete Berg with The Temple in Midtown Atlanta.

He says knowing which churches allow it and which ones do not will be cumbersome for law enforcement in the event of an actual shooting.

The bill would also allow carry permit holders to take their guns unto college campuses except for dorms or sporting events, and into government buildings that lack security.

The Senate has disagreed to the measure as it passed out of the House Friday and now both sides will have to work out their differences with just three days left in the session.
