Jefferson police probe mysterious death

Police are on the scene of a house on Highway 11 in Jackson County, probing a mysterious death.

Jefferson Police Chief Joe Wirthman says a Wednesday night 911 call alerted them to a possible assault at a home at 1187 Winder Highway.  The victim, whom he describes as a "younger female," was taken by ambulance to Athens Hospital.

"She has passed away.  It's a suspicious death," Wirthman tells WSB.  "Being that it is a suspicious death, we called in the GBI to assist us. They have more resources than we do.  I have two investigators, and they have the ability to come out and assist us with equipment and bodies."

Wirthman says the victim's identity could be released this afternoon, if not a cause of death.  An autopsy was underway late Thursday morning.

While the chief would not discuss whether there are any suspects at this point, he wanted to reassure citizens about their own safety.

"I do want to say, also, that the community is safe.  We don't have any crazy person out there running around," says Wirthman.  "The community is safe."
